Howard Arkley Fetches A$2.5M for his piece "Neapolitan delight"

In May 2025 Howard Arkley managed to fetch A$2.5M for his piece 'Neopolitan delight', a pop-art style piece reminiscent of works from Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, channelling Arkley’s interest in the aesthetics of Australian suburbia.

Bids ricocheted around a Sydney auction room as collectors battled to secure the Howard Arkley masterwork, driving the picture up to $2.5 million including buyer’s premium and the top of the 2025 auction sales league table.

It was a new auction record for the late Melbourne artist, whose work was inspired by pop culture and by what he called the “second degree imagery” abounding in suburbia, such as wallpaper and fabric designs.

The dynamic and anarchic punk movement which swept though Melbourne in 1979 was fuelled by a desire to register the energy of the present, and brought with it new thoughts and ideas which pervaded all the arts. It was an exciting, creative time and Arkley was attracted to the break–free spirit and disdain for conformity advocated by Punk. The style of punk fashion which appropriated elements from disparate contexts, could be compared to Arkley’s humorous post modern paintings which irreverently combined high art, pop culture and the everyday.

Although the best-known subject matter of his art is suburbia, seemingly the most boring of themes, for Howard it was an endless source of fascination, and he depicted the sedate homes of Melbourne with a lurid vitality which makes them like a crazy vision of heaven. By 1988, every painting in his annual show at Tolarno Galleries was inspired by suburban themes, which heralded a professional breakthrough and commercial success. In this he changed the way in which we too, observe the world around us, especially through his paintings of houses, factories and freeways.

Howard Arkley was born on May 5,1951 and grew up in the Melbourne suburb of Surrey Hills. His early passion for art was inspired by a family outing to the National Gallery of Victoria in 1967. In 1969, Arkley embarked on an art course at Prahran College of Advanced Education. It was here that Fred Cress, an artist and lecturer, introduced him to the airbrush which became Arkley’s trademark. Arkley refined the use of the airbrush as a drawing tool.

He was energetic and compelling with a personal style that set him apart, and there was no mistaking his commitment and drive as an artist. Howard’s first solo exhibition in 1975 of black and white abstractions at Tolarno Galleries in Fitzroy Street St Kilda, signalled that he was an artist of significance. Already he had claimed his metier with a spray–gun technique that enabled him to explore delicate patterns with a facility and precision that increasingly came to be recognised as his own vernacular.

Arkley worked intensely on a variety of familiar themes in the last two years of his life. He was at the peak of his career and achieved considerable success both in Australia and internationally. In the same year he represented Australia at The Venice Biennale, held his first highly successful one-man show in Los Angeles, and had accepted commissions from the National Gallery of Victoria and the Melbourne Festival. Howard Arkley pursued his art with a passionate intensity.His inventive eye cast a refreshing and exploratory light on the suburbs, in contrast to the cynical and deprecating manner with which it had often been viewed in the past.

“Howard’s work was accessible and enjoyable and has been described variously as quirky, moody, passionate and rigorous. Both the artist and the man struck a special chord in the hearts of so many Australians in a way that few artists – maybe Nolan, Boyd and Whiteley – did.”

Howard Arkley was a colourful and extrovert character and those who knew him were charmed by his warmth and exuberance. He was highly respected within the Arts community for both his distinctive oeuvre and the rigour with which he pursued his practice. Arkley’s personal vision unfolded universal meanings, and in an exhibiting career that spanned only some twenty–four years, he claimed his place boldly as one of Australia’s great artists.

Here's how investors can diversify away from the ASX and other asset classes, and unlock bullish yields ASX News 5 hours ago Jonathon Davidson The Market In a world where there’s more money than ever before and it feels like everybody is trading equities at some point or another, it’s perhaps fair to say that older types of asset classes have been overlooked.

And one of the oldest investment vehicles (ignoring that stock markets have a rich history going back to the 1600s) is one you probably walk past examples of every single day – physical art.

Art Index Pty Ltd is one company operating in Australia (note that the company isn’t publicly listed on the ASX). Headquartered in Sydney, the company operates in an interesting space worth consideration.

While the COVID years may have battered around art markets in recent history (after all, you couldn’t physically attend art auctions during the lockdown years), there’s plenty of room for growth in the years ahead.

Corporate art rentals

While not the entirety of what Art Index gets up to, the company ultimately allows investors to buy individual pieces of art from proven, highly established, highly traded and awarded artists whose artworks have already appreciated in value over the last 10 to 50 years.

Those paintings are then rented out to corporate clients – think office buildings, lawyers’ waiting rooms, and even executive collections – with investors receiving a fixed rental income for each piece acquired, ranging from 7% to 10.25% net per annum under a legally bound contract.

Recent auction strength shows Australian interest

If it’s a space you’re not too familiar with, it’s worth highlighting some recent developments.

In May 2025, celebrated Australian artist Howard Arkley managed to fetch A$2.5M for his piece Neapolitan delight , a pop-art style piece reminiscent of works from Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, channelling Arkley’s interest in the aesthetics of Australian suburbia.

Worth noting is that the piece was expected to fetch around $1 million – less than half of what it ended up selling for.

Arkley is just one name among many when it comes to trending Australian artists of interest to the domestic market.

In more recent history, a rare piece of Australian artist Brett Whiteley’s has just made its way into a pending art auction to be conducted by Menzies.

And according to Art Index CEO Sacha Clemens, this isn’t too surprising.

Australian art market resilient

“In summary, the Australian art market is showing resilience… the market is becoming more segmented, with strong performance in certain areas like Indigenous art, Australian blue-chip artists and high-value works,” Clemens told HotCopper.

And especially in the area of Indigenous art, highly coveted around the world by both museums, corporate clients and private collectors, there’s also cause for excitement down under.

“In the first half of 2025, the indigenous art market has seen impressive growth in comparison to last year, already $11.7m in global sales, whereas 2024 ended with $13.48m in total sales. If the trend continues, it could increase up to 50%.

“Artists such as Emily Kame Kngwarreye have led the way.”

Art Index has a focus on ethical acquisition

“We also envisage some of the late Australian masters such as John Olsen , Jason Benjamin , Margaret Olley , Howard Arkley, Fred Williams , Jeffrey Smart , and John Coburn will continue their upward trend in values,” Clemens elaborated to HotCopper.

2026 outlook is promising for art at home and abroad

The ultimate value proposition that art continues to provide – whether exposure to art rentals or direct collection, or otherwise – also looks set to remain resilient in the months and years ahead.

Get this: According to Straits Research, the global art market fetched a collective value of US$552B in CY2024, and that’s expected to grow to nearly one trillion U.S. dollars (US$944B) by 2033.

That same firm estimates the global art market to hit US$585B by EOY CY2025.

And as offices continue to mandate return to work policies, Art Index CEO Sacha Clemens sees a strong future ahead for the company.

“The future is looking brighter as people are now coming back to the office with employers wanting to make the work environment more aesthetic, which studies have proven to drive productivity,” Clemens explained, in a nod to Art Index’s art rental investment product component.

The latest UBS Global Wealth Report also revealed that no fewer than one in 10 Australians are now millionaires in USD terms, which also suggests an investment landscape with no shortage of participants looking for asset classes with which to diversify.

“New generations are realising art has historically, over millennia, remained a solid asset class through the values of creation, history, alternative investment and cultural identity,” Clemens said.

For nearly 50 years the Aboriginal art market has grown rampantly, with Australian Indigenous fine arts now showcased and celebrated widely across the world.

Art collection leasing company Art Index Founder Sacha Clemens had this in mind when a chance encounter saw him meet Kamilaroi man and founder of Blackroo Community Indigenous Corporation, Steve Fordham. The pair forged a partnership that not only supports First Nation Australians but also helps businesses meet the Federal Government's Reconciliation Action Plan.

Connecting artists with investors

Established by Sacha Clemens in 2007, Sydney-based Art Index has built an extensive portfolio of fine art now valued at more than $30 million from both emerging and established Australian and Asian artists.

Art Index leases artworks to reputable organisations to provide its clients with fixed-term, high-yielding rental income and provide corporate spaces with culturally significant, thought-provoking artwork.

In terms of financial value, Art Index's rental agreement can offer low-risk fixed returns of up to 10.25 per cent per annum and sometimes for up to a minimum of three years.

Included in Art Index’s collection are a number of impressive works by First Nations artists, including renowned names such as Ronnie Tjampitjinpa and Walangkura Napanangka, Judy Watson Napangardi, George “Hairbrush” Tjungari, Warlimpirrnga Tjapaltjarri, Ronnie Tjampitjinpa, Tommy Watson to name a few. All of these have had global recognition for beautiful interpretations of their individual historical bloodline dreaming and teachings they have shared across the international fine art market since the 1960s.

Supporting Indigenous Australia

The vision between Mr. Fordham and Mr. Clemens was to utilise Art Index’s suite of Indigenous artworks in a first-of-its-kind collaboration with Blackroo Community Indigenous Corporation.

The partnership saw Art Index rent out certified indigenous fine art to corporates, with a significant percentage of the rental revenue made from leasing the First Nations and Australian art going directly to Blackroo.

Founded in 2020, BlackRoo is registered with the Office of the Registrar of Indigenous Corporations and the Australian Charities Not-for-profits Commission. The Corporation is endorsed by the ATO as a Deductible Gift Recipient and is registered with Supply Nation.

Blackroo facilitates the Balund-a Program in an NSW Northern Rivers Community Correction Centre that trains indigenous inmates in TAFE Cert II Construction Pathways.

Aimed at addressing Australian Indigenous over-representation in the prison system, the program provides non-Indigenous and Indigenous people who have had turbulent starts to their lives either through being caught in the welfare system or have been incarcerated throughout Australia, BlackRoos’ and Art Index’s commitment to better young humans life reducing the chances of reoffending, get further education, opportunities that they may have not been given, graduates are encouraged to join the “Second Chance For Change” program run by Mr Fordham’s contracting business in the Hunter Valley, NSW.

Mr Fordham said that only one out of the more than 100 individuals that went through the program have fallen back into the prison system, reflecting how the program can achieve successful reintegration into the local community for all those that need that chance all humans have the right to receive regardless of gender, race or life circumstances, with a view of a brighter future.

As well as supporting “Second Chance for Change”, Art Index’s financial contribution to BlackRoo aids in the not-for-profit’s ability to offer businesses a way to fulfil their mandatory quota under the Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) framework, which provides guidelines on how to develop relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

A fresh opportunity for investors

Amid a multi-billion-dollar global art market, Indigenous art presents a unique and valuable investment that is steeped in history from the world’s oldest culture.

Through Art Index’s partnership with Blackroo Industries, First Nations’ artwork is being recognised not only for its cultural value but its financial value too.

Recent auctions at Sotheby’s New York have seen certain artwork sold for more than $1 million – signalling the considerable interest for people to get their hands on these prized possessions.

A Numinya piece (top) from 1977 was sold for an astounding $152,837 , while Kirrimalunya (middle), created in 2001 was auctioned off for $114,628 .

Remarkably, a Water and Bush Tucker Story piece (bottom) from 1972 was sold for in excess of $1 million .

The average price of George Tjungurrayi’s paintings, a traditional Pintupi man, sold in Australia, has risen considerably over the past couple of decades, with average prices at auctions sitting at almost $80,000 . This is far superior to the base figure of less than $20,000 in 2018.

This demonstrates that interest in First Nations artwork is growing and growing fast.

Art Index Champions Art in Hospitals, Bringing Healing and Hope

Sydney-based Art Index, a respected name in the Australian fine art market, have always valued the therapeutic effects of art. In 2008, Art Index donated Aboriginal artwork to the Aboriginal Health Unit at the Westmead Children’s Hospital. There is no limit to the number of items that can be purchased, allowing businesses to maximize this benefit for each individual artwork.

Benefits of Investing in Art for Your Business

Incorporating art into a business environment can significantly improve the aesthetics and atmosphere of the workspace. This deduction applies to each individual purchase, meaning multiple pieces of art can be acquired, each eligible for the 100% tax deduction. Art Index offers a wide range of Australian contemporary and Indigenous art, including original paintings and limited edition prints.

Details of the Tax Deduction

According to an independent, registered taxation consultant, here are the specifics:

Eligibility: The deduction applies to artworks used or displayed in business premises acquired between 12 May 2015 and 30 June 2024.
Applicability: The announcement is applicable to individuals carrying on business with their own ABN, including professionals like lawyers, doctors, accountants, engineers, architects, and storekeepers.
Purchase Flexibility: There is no limit on the number of artworks that can be purchased and depreciated at 100%. Each piece, however, must cost less than $150,000 to qualify individually.

For example, if three artworks at $60,000 each are purchased, totaling $180,000, each artwork qualifies for the deduction because they individually cost less than $150,000.
