Artist Bio
George was born 1947 in traditional Pintupi country
just across the border of WA. His nickname is
‘Hairbrush’ as he has thick locks of black hair.
He has an elder brother, Willy Tjungurrayi and they
began painting for Papunya Tula artists around 1976
with many other men.
Moving around the country, George paints sacred
sites located in his ancestral country associated with
the Tingari Cycle, in a number of locations that
include his ancestral homelands, Wala Wala,
Kiwikurra, Lake Mackay and Kintore amongst them.
George Hairbrush was voted "the most collectable
artist" by Australian Art collector magazine. His works
are exhibited and collected by many galleries and
institutions throughout Australia.
